# Iceland in the Age of Vikings
There are three main themes running through the Age of Vikings that should heavily influence your gaming experience.
# The Law and Family Feuds
There are no kings, queens, or nobility in Iceland. Fiercely independent, Icelanders heed only the law courts of the assemblies, where disputes are settled by the assembled goðar (chieftainpriests), following the law proclaimed atop the Law Rock by the elected Lawspeaker.
Between powerful households, however, the response to injury or insult is often not the law but blood vengeance, striking anywhere and at any time. A killing avenged with another revenge killing, which in turn is avenged with another, in true blood feud fashion.
# Honor and Blood Oaths
Honor plays a significant role in Icelandic society, closely tied to the capacity to defend oneself and one’s property and to exacting revenge. A violent attack to restore honor can happen at any place, against anyone. For that reason, weapons are always carried.
Blood oaths are extended to the network of kinship, and with it comes the responsibility to take revenge for any perceived injury or insult to close or extended family and allies.
# Magic and Monsters
The settlers of Iceland found a land teeming with spirits of nature and mythic creatures. The hidden folk exist, concealing themselves from mortal eyes but sometimes meddling in mortal affairs. Those traveling through the highlands risk being attacked by trolls, and often curses and spells are laid on neighbors and enemies.
Magic and the supernatural, the threat of terrible monsters, as well as the whims of mysterious and all-too-human gods, are all part of daily life.
