# Devotions

Heroes in Icelandic sagas give great importance to religion and often base their code of honor and behavior on the god or goddess they worship. A hero’s Devotion toward a god indicates not only that they worship that god but is also an indication of the hero’s worldview and of the way they strive to live their life.

Although there are individuals who choose to dedicate themselves to one god, it is more common to worship multiple gods and call upon one or another depending on the type of favor one is seeking. The most worshipped gods are Þór, Freyr, and Óðinn, in that order.

A hero starts with three Devotions. Choose three gods from the Gods and Goddesses for Devotions Table and write them down on each Devotion space on your hero sheet, along with the ideals connected to those gods.

  • The open worship of Hel and Loki is very rare and seen by society at large as a serious character flaw.

# Worship (Deity) Skills

Each Devotion has a corresponding Worship skill under the Mythic skill category. Each character is generally strongly associated with a single deity.

# Dedication Points

Each Devotion has its own dedication point (DP) track ranging from 0 to a maximum of 3, depending on your Worship score with each god.

# Dedication Points Table

Worship Score Maximum Dedication points
10–29 1
30–59 2
60+ 3

Heroes start with the maximum number of dedication points in each Devotion.

Dedication points can be used when praying to a god for assistance or blessing with a specific situation or task that comports with that god’s ideals. This does not count as a full action and can be done as part of a combat action. A roll is not necessary—the player deducts a point off the total number of points available to the hero.

  • Spending 1 dedication point adds a +20% bonus to the ability to be used. (Same as a success on an augment roll.)
  • Spending 2 dedication points adds a +30% bonus to the ability to be used. (Same as a special success on an augment roll.)
  • Spending 3 dedication points adds a +50% bonus to the ability to be used. (Same as a critical success on an augment roll.)

# Replenishing Dedication Points

Dedication points are replenished by a successful Worship (deity) roll when performing sacrifices or rituals, or when taking part in religious festivals at temples. A success replenishes 1 dedication point, while a special success replenishes 2 points, and a critical success replenishes 3 points. Points gained beyond the maximum number for that deity are discarded.

Except for a victory sacrifice performed on the first day of summer, only one Worship roll may be attempted per sacrifice or religious festival. The hero must pick one Devotion to be sacrificed for per occasion.
